If you are visiting Colorado this vacation season, don’t forget to check out Golden. This aptly-named city is located in Jefferson County and lies along the Clear Creek, right on the edge of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Golden has a distinctive atmosphere that alludes to country and western living. Much of its history involves gold-mining. The city also has an outdoors feel to it, encouraging its tourists and residents to explore kayaking, boating, hiking and biking.
Despite all the activity you may see in the summer, remember that for the other three seasons Golden is overrun by college students. The Colorado School of Mines joins two public schools as the major educational centers of the city.
What are some of the attractions in Golden? The major attractions include historical sites like the Coors Brewery Tour, the largest single-site beer brewing plant in the world. In fact, many tourists remark that you can smell the hops and grain all over the city! The brewery offers free guided tours. Another historical site of interest is the Colorado Railroad Museum. This museum showcases antiques of the railroad era, including heritage railways, cabooses and steam locomotives.
The Clear Creek Whitewater Park is a great place for outdoors activity. Here is where residents and tourists can kayak, boat or relax with tubes and boards. Indeed, the scene is so active that many tourists merely enjoy watching the kayakers from a distance. Visitors can also visit the Heritage Square Victoria Village with theme restaurants and a music hall that features live plays.
Last but not least (and definitely not forgotten) there’s the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave site. Not only can you see the grave of the west’s most famous face, but you can also view many touring exhibits. Golden Colorado may not be as big as Denver, but it is definitely worth its weight in golden memories.
