Eldora's Proposed Expansion Under Review

The Middle Boulder Creek Coalition has expressed concerns over a recently proposed expansion project of Colorado’s Eldora Mountain Resort. The proposed expansion would create improved ski conditions with shorter lifts and better facilities, but some argue that the project would adversely affect the environment of the area.

Officials from the U.S. Forest Service are in the early stages of putting together a statement on the environmental impact after the department accepted Eldora Mountain Resort’s proposal of the project for the ski resort. Two meetings on July 18 and 19 were scheduled to be held at the Boulder Ranger District Office and the Nederland Community Center to give the public the chance to address their concerns over the statement.

The expansion project would specifically create seven additional trails and open two gladed runs. The project would also call for the opening of two lifts called Placer Express as well as Moose Glade Express as a means of extending access for skiers all the way to Middle Boulder Creek’s edge.

Due to the 1,000 feet of expansion in the direction of Middle Boulder Creek, many residents are concerned that the extension will affect wildlife habitats and call for the removal of many trees in the area. Some people are also concerned about the increased noise and the fact that runoff from the area could adversely impact local residents’ water supply.

Proponents of the plan state that the project will not have an impact on the water supply and that it will stay within the guidelines of environmental laws.

The U.S. Forest Service has yet to officially authorize the project. The project will not be approved until the entire statement on the environmental impact is complete. It may take over a year to fully develop the statement.
